Birthday Fun Part I

Mom DB and Andrea arrived last Tuesday to celebrate Luke's first birthday with us. We have had an absolute blast with them here. Luke has been loving all the attention and has been spoiled silly. As always the time goes by far too fast but we have enjoyed every moment!
Tuesday afternoon we went on a 'mini hike' on the trails behind Crafton College. Matt and I had never been up there and it was too beautiful a day to waste staying inside. For some reason we thought that we might be able to push Luke in a stroller up the trails- not sure why we thought that. Boy were we wrong. The trails were narrow, all dirt and/or rocks and pretty steep- at least at first. We quickly ditched our stroller behind a bush and continued up the trails taking turns carrying Luke.

Once we reached the top it flattened out a bit and Luke was no longer content to be carried. He is too independent and curious for that. He made is quite clear that he needed to be let loose to explore. He had a great time walking all around until he tripped and scraped his face along the gravel. The scrapes on nose and forehead from falling on our patio were just starting to heal too! He is such a boy. I don't think I can remember what his face looks like without some scratch, scrape, bump or bruise.
Wednesday we went to The University of California Riverside to walk through the Botanic (not botanical) Gardens on campus. Luke was thrilled as you can see.
He was not as thrilled to be confined to his stroller however.
Once we let him out he was happy as can be. Luckily, these trails were much more level and less rocky so he could roam about more easily. No bumps or bruises on this excursion.
Taking a little rest on a bench (and when I say "little rest" I mean very little- maybe 2 seconds worth- before getting down to explore some more)
We probably spent the majority of our time in the gardens chasing after Luke but in the meantime we did enjoy the scenery and marveled at the beauty of God's creation.

The only way Luke was happy being carried was if he was up on Matt's shoulders, otherwise he'd throw a fit if we tried to carry him or put him in his stroller. sigh.
He was happy to help push his stroller however.
We were all pretty tuckered out afterward.
(Sorry Andrea, I couldn't resist posting this picture - you'll forgive me eventually. ) :)

We LOVE hiking in the trails around Crafton Hills. There are some fun ones. We used to do it all the time before we had kids. Matt and I were just saying the other day we need to get a babysitter so we can go hiking :)

Also... the botanic gardens at UCR are special to us... Matt and I both went to UCR (that's where we met), and it's the first place we held hands, lol. Just thought you'd love to know that bit of trivia about us ;)
